Star Wars Galaxies - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

last updated 4.29.2005

What is SWG?

SWG Stands for Star Wars Galaxies. It is a massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game. That means that thousands of players are playing this game on the Internet all the time. This is the Star Wars version of these kinds of games. It is developed and maintained by Sony Online Entertainment, Inc. It is licensed by LucasArts, Inc. These games require a monthly membership fee. The current monthly fee is $15 per month. You pay prepay months in advance for a discount. Your computer will likely need to be upgraded over time as the hardware requirements change. The game continues to be updated and changed. I hope the monthly fee won't change for a while.

What does grinding mean?

Grinding is a term in SWG (and other MMOs) that means doing a sometimes boring activity to gain Experience Points (XP) in order to gain a perferable skill or bonus to your character.

Can you fly in this game?

Yes! The Jump to Lightspeed expansion is out in stores. If you already have SWG, you must buy the expansion in order to fly in space (or to travel with someone else in space on a multiplayer ship). The monthly fee is the same for those who have the expansion. With the upcoming release of the new expansion, Rage of the Wookiees, you will be able to purchase both expansions put together and purchase of the entire game will be in a box set with both of the expansions included.

What are the minimum hardware requirements for this game?

You first of all need an internet connection to play the game. For more specific (and up-to-date) details go here.
I recommend at least a DSL or Cable Internet connection. It is possible to use dial-up or satellite connections, but I wouldn't want to attempt it. The lag is too much for both of those. For those of you that don't understand the previous sentences, find a computer geek near you.

Where is the official webpage?

Here is the official webpage. I repeat some things in here. I suggest looking in the forums to learn from the people who play the game. In here, I am honest and try to filter out fact from fiction.

Why are you doing this?

For the money.. just kidding! No, I like writing this webpage. How strange is that?
